Education in statistics
The Interstate Statistical Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States on October 20, 2025 hosted an international conference "Education in Statistics" in Moscow as part of the celebration of the World Statistics Day.

World Statistics Day was established by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2010 to highlight the vital role of official statistics in society and promote evidence-based decision-making. The Day is celebrated every five years. This year its theme was "Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone."
The conference was attended by the representatives of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and leading economic universities from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as the executives and employees of the CIS Statistical Committee, the CIS Executive Committee, and international statistical experts.
The goal of the conference was to discuss relevant issues and prospects for the development of statistical education in the CIS region.
The conference participants were welcomed by Ms.Polina Kryuchkova, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, and Mr.Konstantin Laykam, Chairman of the CIS Statistical Committee. Mr. Laykam read a message from Mr.António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, dedicated to the World Statistics Day.
The participants shared national knowledge and best practices in statistical agencies personnel training and developing their professional skills. They emphasized the importance of close collaboration between NSOs and educational institutions, as well as the implementation of innovative teaching methods, and a practice-oriented approach to training. Particular attention was paid to improving statistical education in line with modern challenges and the need to enhance and develop the statistical literacy of users.
The participants has expressed their gratitude to the CIS Statistical Committee for promoting dialogue between NSOs, educational institutions and the scientific community and unanimously supported future activities under the auspices of the CIS Statistical Committee to develop statistical education and statistical literacy in the CIS region.

The event was organized due to the CIS Statistical Committee's project "Development of CIS Statistics", financed by the Government of the Russian Federation. One of the main objectives of the project is to strengthen the professional statistical community and to improve statistical education.
