II International Statistical Forum of the CIS
Draft Agenda
II International Statistical Forum of the CIS: new technologies and data sources in statistics
October 2 – 4, 2024 Tashkent October 2, 2024, Wednesday
October 2, 2024, Wednesday
Opening of the Forum (welcome remarks from officials of Uzbekistan, Secretary General of the CIS Executive Committee, Chairman of CIS-STAT, Director of the UN Statistics Division, Director of UNECE Statistics Division and other international organizations) to be confirmed
Session 1 “Data management. Integration of information resources at the national level"
Combining data from various sources significantly increases the efficiency of their use and at the same time reduces the burden on respondents. In this case, the following challenges arise: inventory of available sources of information and assessment of their quality; harmonization of used concepts, classifications, formats and technologies; data privacy protection and other issues. During the session, participants will exchange national experience in solving the listed problems and implementing international recommendations in these areas.
Session 2 “Statistical education: challenges and priorities”
The session will consider priority areas of professional training in the field of statistics, including those related to the digitalization of society and innovative technologies used in statistics, issues of improving professional and educational standards in the field of statistics. It is also planned to consider the experience and prospects for carrying out activities to strengthen the professional statistical community in the CIS region, to present a new direction of the CIS-STAT work on the development of professional competencies in statistics, the implementation of which will be carried out within the framework of the project “Development of CIS Statistics”.
October 3, 2024, Thursday
Session 3 “New technologies for collecting, processing, analyzing and disseminating statistical data”
The session will examine modern trends in the collection, processing, analysis and dissemination of statistical data: the introduction of geographic information systems, the use of Business Intelligence (BI) and online analytical processing (OLAP) technologies, international standards for data and metadata exchange (SDMX) and quality standards based on models GSBPM, GSIM, GAMSO, smart data - open linked data that meets the principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability (FAIR data).
Session 4 “Big and administrative data”
The session will examine examples of national practices in the use of administrative and Big Data, primarily for the production of official statistics. A serious challenge is the creation of a legal and organizational framework to access them, technologies for their obtainment and exchange, and other issues. Special attention will be paid to the preparation and conduct of the 2030 Population census based on registers and other data sources, as well as improving monitoring of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals based on alternative sources.
October 4, 2024, Friday
Session 5 “Artificial intelligence and official statistics”
Artificial intelligence (AI) already offers many uses that can significantly reduce costs and increase operational efficiency. The use of AI in statistics is no exception. Using AI, you can automate certain processes, use new types of data, and process large volumes of information. If previously the issues of machine learning (ML) were widely discussed in world statistical practice, now the scope of its application has expanded and began to include more modern developments in this area, such as large language models (LLMs). The session provides for the exchange of views and experience on the use of AI in statistical practice, the risks of using AI systems, and the creation of legal conditions for the development and implementation of AI.
Closing of the Forum.
